Training
Selina Cawkwell - The Story So Far!
I began riding at 4 yrs at a local riding school. Got my own pony at 10 and
began competing at local Riding and Pony Clubs. By 15 I had JA ponies and
was travelling the National circuit culminating in representing GB in a
pony team in Ireland. I progressed to Young Rider classes with 2 Grade A
horses and novice horses to produce and sell. With the Grade A's I
continued on the National circuit regularly competing at all the major UK
shows. I competed at RIHS 4 times at the NEC in the National Young Riders
Champs and 5 times at HOYS my best results being 3rd and 5th in the
National Grade A Champs and the Pro Am class with John Whitaker. I rode
again in the England team in Scotland where we won the gold medal and then
was selected for the European Young Riders Championships in Belgium.
Unfortunately I contracted meningitis and had to give up my place on the
team. During this time I trained with some of the best trainers in the
country at the time including Dick Stillwell, Mike Saywell and John Lanni.
After Young Riders I took some time out to travel and came back to the
sport in 1997. I started with one horse whom I bought just broken, produce
him to Grade A and sold him on. I then got the producing bug and continued
buying young horses to produce and sell and so through friends in Holland
my business Milton Warmbloods evolved. I caught the eye of a few notable
owners and spent a short time producing youngsters for Paul Fabrications
and then rode some older Grade A horses for former British Chef d'Equipe
Ronnie Massarella. I also started training with Malcolm Pyrah who still
helps me to date. My producing business has gone from strength to strength
and as well as selling a few horses to Guernsey and Jersey I have also sold
horses to Malaysia, Taiwan, Spain and the USA. Some of my horses have been
bought by top riders in this country and gone on to great things. Paladin
is jumping the International circuit in America with Norman Dello Joio and
Oberon recently won the National Championship in Taiwan. Ralma was 4th in
the 5yo Championship with me at Scope and then was bought by Malcolm Pyrah.
I now am the agent for top Canadian/Chinese rider Samantha Lam who is
training for the Beijing Olympics and I have a few horses that I am
producing for her too. I have many pupils at home who range from novice
riders to top level Eventers and show jumpers. I continue producing young
horses and my ambition is to find a horse who will one day compete at the
Olympics. I have a big yard in the centre of England in Doncaster where as
well as selling and training we do liverys and have a few shows in our
indoor arena.
